On Monday, February 21st. Carol will start Jen Wilkin’s study of the Sermon on the Mount. Each week will involve a teaching video that will last about 30-40 minutes, followed by a discussion of the points brought out in the video and the homework from the prior week. We will end with a time of prayer. I am planning on the meeting times lasting an hour and 15 minutes. There will be a morning session at 9:00 and an evening session at 6:30.
As always, the homework is optional, and you will be able to be a part of the conversation without buying the workbook or doing the homework. But (as always), I will mention that doing the homework will take you deeper into the study and bring more encouragement to your heart. The workbook is $17 (including tax and shipping). If you can find it cheaper, please let me know where you found it.
This is a nine-week series. I will be out of town on two Mondays (March 7th and March 14th) so barring any other interruptions to our meetings, the study should conclude on Monday, May 2nd.
Here are a couple of blurbs taken directly from the book to explain a little more what the study is about:
In His sweeping depiction of kingdom citizenship, Jesus utters some of the most familiar passages in all of Scripture. Most of us have only encountered the Sermon on the Mount in fragments, considering its subdivisions as complete teachings in their own right—a study on blessedness; a reflection on the Lord’s Prayer; a discussion of religious devotion, money, ambition, and relationships. But what if we navigated these three chapters in Matthew as they were originally heard: as one cohesive, well-ordered message, intended to challenge us to think differently about what it means to be a follower of Jesus, a citizen of the kingdom of heaven? This nine-session study will give you the opportunity to do just that. Come and learn from Jesus, just as his disciples did.
And:
The Bible study you are about to begin may be different from studies you have done in the past. It will not cover a specific topic from many angles. It will not have poetry or stories that leave you laughing, crying, or inspired. It will not focus on answering the question, “What does the Bible say about me?” It will not aid you in self-discovery, at least not as its primary intent.
What it will do is teach you an important passage of the Bible in a way that will stay with you for years to come. It will challenge you to move beyond loving God with just your heart to loving Him with your mind. It will focus on answering the question, “What does the Bible say about God?” It will aid you in the worthy task of God-discovery.
You see, the Bible isn’t a book about self-discovery; it’s a book about God-discovery. The Bible is God’s declared intent to make Himself known to us. In learning about the character of God in Scripture, we will experience self-discovery, but it must not be the focus of our study. The focus must be God Himself.
